It's not that purple, see?
The flash shows up the ugly truth!
in slightly less harsh light the purple looks suitably regal. An attempt at a more real life pic anyway not two inches away from a halogen bulb.

Cloak & Sash
Purple and yellow is the theme.
Yes I know it is REALLY purple :(
Not quite that garish in normal light....
Very happy with the colour transition, I think i have to many shaded areas though.
method was:
50/50 Liche/Black - then added a bit more liche to the pallete painted that on, then used thinned liche followed by a bit of thinned warlock purple.
Sash details etc... first coat of golden yellow, will need another and then probably a sunburst yellow highlight.
take a look...
so he likes pruples, and yellows?? he also has a giant sword! (made some subtle changes to cloak tone before these pics )

Empire Captian - Armour
Here we go.
One of the bits I was most looking forward to painting, I do like metallic paints, although they can be hard to use without it looking tacky, I think ive managed to keep the bling under control.
Process was: (as usual too many steps, I think lack of confidence is made up for by many, many steps in the process)
Paint it boltgun - keep brush strickes in a uniform direction and do not load your brush, wipe some paint off on paper. (cover every bit of metal)
Give it a wash or black/asurmen blue, nice and heavy in the cracks, on the high surfaces try and get them stained a bit but dont blob it on.
Let the above dry and wash the cracks only with black, be heavy but controled with the wash.
Paint boltgun over again. leave the cracks.
add chainmail but move further to high areas and leave lower areas.
Same again with mythril silver.
Wash it with pure blue ink, stain the metal blue, we are not really trying to shade in this stage, just stain.
Paint (drybrush) mythril silver over the highest areas.
The end result is below, I wanted a definite blue steel type colour, this stuff isn't straight out of the smithy.
Same technique on the sword, blending up the blade through the metallics, black ink blobbed at the hilt. I want it to be solid steel except the grip. Always tempted to go gold but gold is a soft metal, and this isnt supposed to be a decorative sword.
[[generic looks better in real life statement]] (It totally does!)
***yes I am too scared to even attempt the eyes just now***

Empire Captain - Skin
OK doke,
For the Skin: (Which I am not too happy with but I think it is of a passable standard and the more you mess with it the worse it gets I think!)
Dark Flesh base:
then a 50/50 dark flesh: Dwarf flesh:
then dwarf flesh, a devlan mud wash in the shaded areas, finished with highlighting of a dwarf flesh/elf flesh 50/50 mix, finaly a bit of elf flesh/ white.
The beard withh be in the armour updates post.
I did that with a scorched brown base up to bubonic brown finish. I gave him a hair colour that would not clash with any lighter shades of leather on the model later on. Looks a bit browny blonde. Or that he has tried to bleech his hair?

Mouth
Finished it off with leached bone drybrush then picked out the teeth with white. Got lucky the purple still shows the bits where he cant get a toothbrush to in the morning.
I also ordered one of those "3rd hand" clamp things for the next project.

Carapace completed, mouth WIP
Hey,
completed the carapace, I tried to finalise the highlights (gotta stop somewhre right?) with a 50/50 blood red/bad moon yellow.
I have basecoated teeth/mouth with bleached bone and then washed it with leviathan purple wash.
Spent a while on some other areas just adding more blood red till I thought it looked right. Also touched up some red scuffs on the body :)
The Pictures should show blood red layer through orange layer for highlighting then a bit of the mouth, dont know if i've been bold enough with the highlights, the shaded areas are more shaded than the pictures show though luckily.
I plan to drybrush the teeth back up to bleached bone/white.

Red Gore, or is it?
Well I tried red gore as the next stage but its just not right. Then tried a nice thin blood red (which seems to be only available in the old school pots for some reason) surely cant be considering phasing out that colour...
nothing to scientific in application just using the transparency of the paint to slowly build up colour. I'm not even sure what this is :) feathering I think!

some more progress
not far off completing the scab red layer now. I'd say each update on this first highlight stage constitutes an hours painting.
